On-Farm Canola Trial Shows Guardian Outperforms Competitor Program in Yield and ROI

Thanks to Cortney, one of our AgTek360 Alberta Territory Managers, for providing insights and data from a recent on-farm canola trial. 🌱

This independently run trial compared Guardian against a combination of a competitor humic product and a fungicide program. The application was completed via aerial application by BradleyAirspray across 160 acres, split down the middle for a clean side-by-side comparison and weighed for accuracy.

Below, we break down the input costs, yield performance, and total return on investment—showing how Guardian supported both crop health and overall profitability.

Trial Objective

To evaluate how Guardian, a nutrient-balanced foliar product, performs compared with a competitor humic product + fungicide program when applied during fungicide timing in canola.

Cost Comparison

Competitor Humic Product + Fungicide

  • Total Cost: $33.00/ac
  • Breakdown:
    • Fungicide: $24.00/ac
    • Competitor fertility product (0.5 L/ac): $9.00/ac

Guardian

  • Total Cost: $14.55/ac
  • Breakdown:
    • Guardian applied at 1.5 gal/ac ($9.70/gal)

Input Savings

Using Guardian resulted in an immediate input savings of $18.45/ac compared with the competitor program.

Yield Performance

The Guardian treatment yielded 1.5 bu/ac more than the competing fungicide + humic combination.

Revenue Advantage

With canola priced at $12/bu, this yield increase generated an additional:

  • $18.00/ac in revenue

Total Return Advantage

When input savings and yield gains are combined, the numbers speak for themselves:

  • Input Savings: $18.45/ac
  • Yield Gain: $18.00/ac
  • Total Advantage: $36.45/ac

Guardian not only reduced upfront costs but also delivered a superior return on investment.

Why Guardian Performs

Guardian is a unique formulation that brings together slow-release nitrogen and the disease-fighting benefits of chloride, making it an ideal application during fungicide timing when crops are under significant stress.

Key Features of Guardian (10-3-4-0-8C):

  • Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium: Boost overall plant vigor, resilience, and growth.
  • Chloride:
    • Supports photosynthesis
    • Helps maintain moisture balance
    • Enhances natural disease suppression
  • Slow-Release Nitrogen:
    • Provides a steady nutrient feed
    • Prevents leaf burn
    • Ensures safer, more effective foliar uptake

Applying Guardian at fungicide timing gives canola an extra boost when it needs it most—during rapid growth and high disease pressure. The chloride in Guardian also works synergistically with fungicides, reinforcing protection and supporting greener, more photosynthetically efficient leaf tissue.

Application Flexibility

Guardian is designed for both ground and aerial foliar application, and it can be applied:

  • On its own
  • Or in tank mixes with compatible fertilizers and pesticides

Its slow-release nitrogen helps ensure safe absorption of chloride, making it a reliable option for boosting plant strength without causing stress.
